Oh, my! Let me just add this lute to our inventory and I'll be right with you. As you know, my name is Stringulina Lutino and I am in charge of keeping our instrument selection in stock.
Did you know that instrumental music has just come into its own during our Renaissance? Up until this time, it was closely tied to vocal models of composition. Because of the new instrumental styles of music, there has been a need to create new instrumental forms.
Instrumental music being composed today does include pieces based on preexisting material. In some cases, composers transcribe polyphonic vocal works into arrangements for specific instruments or sets of instruments from the same or complimentary families, such as the lute with the keyboard.
Forms of musical composition I'm sure you will recognize, for they exist in your day as I overheard one group of travelers say - preludes, toccatas, dances such as the pavane and the allemande.
We have our instruments grouped as to the family they belong to. Feel free to look around.
