Continue Tour of Instruments

Non-keyboard stringed instruments can be placed for descriptive purposes in three principal groups:

Those like violins and lutes, in which the sound box is attached to a projecting neck along which strings are stopped by the player's hand:

Sarah on Lute (sample sound included)
Martin on the Viola da Gamba (sample sound included)
Eric on the Cittern (sample sound included)

Those like zithers and dulcimers, in which the sound box requires no projecting neck:

Florence on the Zither (sample sound included)
Guinevere on the Hammered Dulcimer (sample sound included)
Richard on the Psaltery (sample sound included)
Allen on the Vielle a Roue (sample sound included)

Harps, in which the sound box forms one side of an open triangular structure traversed by the strings.

Anne on the Harp (sample sound included)
